Electrical safety is extremely important. In honor of Fire Prevention Week, we’ve provided some fire prevention tips to help you protect your home or business. When it comes to fire safety, there are many electrical issues to consider, from smoke alarm installation to appropriate light bulb wattage.

About Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention Week is October 4–10, and this year’s main message is “hear the beep where you sleep.” This week is all about raising public awareness about fire safety and teaching effective prevention tactics. The National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) advises that “every bedroom needs a working smoke alarm.” NFPA statistics show that smoke detectors are highly effective in preventing deaths and injuries due to fire. If you don’t already have smoke alarms installed in every bedroom in your house, give us a call. Our professional technicians will assess your home and install smoke detectors in each bedroom and in other areas as needed.

Fire Prevention Tips

Here’s a full list of electric-related fire prevention tips to help keep your home and your family safe:

  • Make sure smoke alarms are installed in every bedroom, outside every sleeping area, and on every level of your home.
  • Install carbon monoxide detectors on every floor.
  • Check all smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors once a month to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Replace all smoke alarms after 10 years.
  • Check outlets for loose plugs, which may overheat and cause a fire.
  • Make sure all electrical cords are in good condition, and replace any cords that are worn or frayed. (Do not tape your electrical cords.)
  • Check all light bulbs and make sure each bulb is the appropriate wattage for the size of its fixture.
  • Make sure your home’s electrical panel is up to code.
