Spring is the perfect time for gardening, lawn care, and landscaping. You’re probably familiar with the common warning, “call before you dig.” But there are also several other electrical safety considerations that you should be aware of. Before tackling yard work and other outdoor projects this spring, be sure to review the yard work safety tips outlined below.

The Dos and Don’ts of Yard Work Safety

Electrical safety precautions play a big role in preventing yard work injuries. Here’s a list of what to do and what not to do when it comes to yard work safety.

  • Do call before you dig. (This sage advice is worth repeating.)
  • Do look up and look out for overhead power lines before trimming trees or climbing ladders. Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI) recommends keeping all ladders at least 10 feet away from power lines and their connections.
  • Do use insulated extension cords specifically designed for outdoor use, if extension cords are needed.
  • Do carefully inspect power tools and electric lawn mowers for frayed power cords, broken plugs, or other electric damage.
  • Don’t use damaged power tools.
  • Don’t leave electric tools plugged in or lying out when they’re not in use.
  • Don’t do any yard work involving electricity or power tools during rainy or damp conditions—including wet grass.
  • Don’t plant vegetation or install permanent structures near those big, green ground-level boxes that house components of the underground electrical system.
